چکیده

We describe and analyze the joint source/channel coding properties of a class of sparse graphical codes based on compounding a low-density generator matrix (LDGM) code with a low-density parity check (LDPC) code. Our first pair of theorems establish that there exist codes from this ensemble, with all degrees remaining bounded independently of block length, that are simultaneously optimal as both source and channel codes when encoding and decoding are performed optimally. More precisely, in the context of lossy compression, we prove that finite degree constructions can achieve any pair (R,D) on the rate-distortion curve of the binary symmetric source. In the context of channel coding, we prove that finite degree codes can achieve any pair (C, p) on the capacity-noise curve of the binary symmetric channel. Next, we show that our compound construction has a nested structure that can be exploited to achieve the WynerZiv bound for source coding with side information (SCSI), as well as the Gelfand-Pinsker bound for channel coding with side information (CCSI). Although the current results are based on optimal encoding and decoding, the proposed graphical codes have sparse structure and high girth that renders them well-suited to message-passing and other efficient decoding procedures.

Analysis of LDGM and compound codes for lossy compression and binning

Recent work has suggested that low-density generator matrix (LDGM) codes are likely to be effective for lossy source coding problems. We derive rigorous upper bounds on the effective rate-distortion function of LDGM codes for the binary symmetric source, showing that they quickly approach the rate-distortion function as the degree increases. We also compare and contrast the standard LDGM constr...

Properties of Ldgm-ldpc Codes with Applications to Secrecy Coding

OF THE THESIS Properties of LDGM-LDPC codes With Applications to Secrecy Coding by Manik Raina Thesis Directors: Professor Predrag Spasojević The ensemble of low-density generator-matrix/low-density parity-check (LDGM-LDPC) codes has been proposed in literature. In this thesis, an irregular LDGM-LDPC code is studied as a sub-code of an LDPC code with some randomly punctured outputbits. It is sh...

Design of Nested LDGM-LDPC Codes for Compress-and-Forward in Relay Channel

A three terminal relay system with binary erasure channel (BEC) was considered, in which a source forwarded information to a destination with a relay’s ”assistance”. The nested LDGM (Low-density generator-matrix) -LDPC (lowdensity parity-check) was designed to realize Compress-andforward (CF) at the relay. LDGM coding compressed the received signals losslessly and LDPC realized the binning for ...

Slepian-Wolf Cooperation: A Practical and Efficient Compress-and-Forward Relay Scheme

The Slepian-Wolf (SW) cooperation proposed in [1] is probably the first practical cooperative scheme that implements the idea of compress-and-forward. Through the exploitation of efficient distributed source coding (DSC) technology, the authors of [1] demonstrate the effectiveness of Slepian-Wolf cooperation in combating inter-user channel outage in wireless environment. In this paper, we discu...

Capacity of the Gaussian Two-way Relay Channel to within 1/2 Bit

In this paper, a Gaussian two-way relay channel, where two source nodes exchange messages with each other through a relay, is considered. We assume that all nodes operate in full-duplex mode and there is no direct channel between the source nodes. We propose an achievable scheme composed of nested lattice codes for the uplink and structured binning for the downlink. We show that the scheme achi...
